It’s been a while since I took time off (but I need this)

In my nearly 15 years working as sports editor at The Glengarry News, I have aimed to take my vacation time during lulls in the county sports scene, largely to make it easier for the rest of the staff of the newspaper. However, recent circumstances have forced me to take a leave of absence. I have already been off for a week and am sad to have missed writing about two high school soccer teams from Alexandria that medalled at OFSAA (The GDHS Gaels senior boys scored gold, while le Relais’ Rapides senior girls nabbed silver), among numerous other things.

This break for me has been much needed. Here’s why.

At a May 31 meeting with ownership (managers and reporters were there too) of The News, I learned that the owner sees the demise of sports coverage in the newspaper, planning to kill off the sports pages, since, in his words, advertisers do not support our sports coverage. (I would argue this is a ridiculous statement as advertisers don’t specifically support numerous sections of the paper, such as the page 4 editorials, letters to the editor, community columns, etc. Businesses and organizations advertise to promote their products/services/promotions and to support, in general, the newspaper’s role in covering events in our communities.) The owner also intends to kill off my job as sports editor. That’s not to say he doesn’t see The News covering sports in some limited way. He claims that he expects the newspaper still will somehow, perhaps “dumping” it to the website.

To say the least, I was upset. I will fight this

Contrary to the owner’s view, I see the sports coverage in The Glengarry News as a key part of the newspaper each and every week. I have worked very hard over the years to provide readers with information on various sports, along with results and photographs. I believe sports are a very important part of our community, and our community newspaper should reflect this.

If you agree, I encourage you to direct messages to ownership of The News. And I thank you. #SaveLocalNews #SaveLocalSports #SaveLocal
