The Glengarry Soccer League’s senior women’s indoor schedule resumes tonight, January 6, following a break for the Christmas holidays, with Glen Sandfield and Vankleek Hill set to battle at the dome, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Two matches are booked for Tuesday night. At 7:30 p.m., Vankleek Hill will play Glen Nevis, and an hour later, it will be Glen Sandfield and Dalhart taking to the turf.
Glen Nevis sports a perfect 6-0 record coming off the 2019 portion of the schedule. Alexandria, at 5-2, holds second spot. Vankleek Hill, Glen Sandfield, and Dalhart round out the standings, respectively.
Two young Glengarry women are first-year members of university soccer teams. Sara Carriere, a graduate of le Relais, is with the Concordia Stingers, while Brooke Lapierre, who graduated from GDHS, has cracked the roster of the Trent Excalibur.
Carriere’s Stingers started their schedule with some exhibition action in Maine last month, beating Fort Kent Maine University 7-0 and Moncton University 4-2. Of the experience living and training in Montreal, she says, “Concordia is definitely my place.”
It’s been a tough start for the ladies in league play. They opened with a 10-0 thrashing at the hands of Laval, then tied UQTR 1-1 before falling to Bishop’s 2-1 on September 6. Next action is set for September 13 at Sherbrooke.
Trent has hit the soccer pitch just twice so far and remains unbeaten in OUA action. The Peterborough-based university tied Carleton 1-1 and beat Laurentian 2-0. The Excalibur are scheduled to play today versus Ottawa.
Lapierre is taking a joint major in forensic science and psychology at Trent. Playing as a midfielder, she saw action in the game versus Laurentian.
The county also has Cameron Brodie as a third-year midfielder with the Nipissing University Lakers who are 2-0 so far this season.
The Roadrunners senior women’s hockey team, which plays out of the rink in Maxville and competes in an Ottawa-based league, has announced its tryouts for the 2019-20 season.
Team organizer Tammy MacSweyn tells me that the first tryout session will be held Tuesday, August 27, at 8:30 p.m., at the Glengarry Sports Palace, in Alexandria.
A second session is booked for Friday, September 6, also at 8:30 p.m. at the Palace. There will be a third workout at a date to be determined. The team will use the ice in Maxville, once it’s ready. The Roadrunners compete in the senior ‘A/BB’ division of the National Capital Women’s Hockey League.
