Tyke Wildcats wrangle NCAFA championship

The Cornwall tyke Wildcats are the 2019 NCAFA champions, winners over the Cumberland Panthers 64-8, in the November 3 final, played in Nepean.

Technically Cornwall’s tyke 2 team (as the club fielded two squads at this level for the fall gridiron league), the Wildcats claimed the Seaway City’s second-ever NCAFA ‘A’ cup. This team had a dominant playoff run, outscoring opponents 206-22 in 3 games.

Team members are 6 – Tewasohkwatenies Jacobs LB, 8 – Connor Hamelin RB/LB, 13 – Bryce Camplin QB, 19 – Cree Ransom LB, 27 – Myles Merpaw LB/FB, 31 – Preston King DL, 34 – Caleb Martin LB, 55 – Daunte Goddard LB, 60 – Cason Kilger OL/DL, 66 – CJ Despatie OL/DL, 91 – Max Legros OL/DL, and 96 – Alek Aubin OL/DL.

The coaching staff comprises head coach Kirby Camplin and assistant coaches Dan Legros, Stephane Aubin, and Mike Vierling.

Cornwall racked up 364 all-purpose yards of offence in the championship game (122 passing, 242 rushing) while holding Cumberland to a combined 144 yards (0 passing).

Individual offensive leaders for the Wildcats were Camplin (5/8 passing, 122 yards, 4 touchdowns by pass, 1 rushing touchdown), Hamelin (15 rushes, 174 yards), and Merpaw (5 receptions, 122 yards, 4 touchdowns).

Leaders on defence in the final included Merpaw (11 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 1 sack, 7 tackles for loss), Martin (6 solo tackles, 1assisted tackle), Hamelin (3 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 1 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble), and King (3 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 1 forced fumble).

On the season, the squad amassed a record of 11 wins and 0 losses. The core of this tyke team has a combined win/loss ratio of 21-1 over the last two years in NCAFA. With the success at this introductory level of tackle football, the Wildcats football club executive believes that the future is bright locally for the game.
