Lowe retains title as golf club champ

Alexandria’s Ben Lowe retained his title as club champion, following his win over the weekend in the Glengarry Golf and Country Club’s two-day tournament, organized by Jean-Marc Titley.

On rounds of 72 and 74, Lowe prevailed over the field at the August 23-23 event, to win the A flight and, with it, the 2020 club championship. The Bishop’s University student-athlete was one stroke off his result from last year, when he carded a two-day score of 145.

Lowe tells me that he has “been playing quite a bit” of golf over the summer, competing in a few area tournament, “but still haven’t been able to practice as much as I’ve liked.”

He’s a familiar face at the Alexandria golf course, as he also works there.

The 20-year-old Glengarrian is scheduled to head back to university over the Labour Day weekend, and from what has been announced so far, the university golf season is still a go this fall in the province of Quebec, “fingers crossed.” It’s the lone jurisdiction in Canada to still have fall sports on the schedule, as associations in Ontario, western Canada, and the Atlantic region have pre-emptively cancelled all sports due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All national championships have also been nixed.

Nate MacMillan was the A Flight runner-up at the club championship tournament, shooting a two-day total of 154.

Marc Sauve won the B Flight (164), with Marc Rolland placing second (172)

Gilles Leroux topped the C Flight (182).

In the senior group, Denis Barsalo won, recording a 157, while Bill Shields placed second, with a 161.

Lowe scores golf club championship

Alexandria’s Ben Lowe is the 2019 club champion at the Glengarry Golf and Country Club. The graduate of Glengarry District High School shot a two-day total of 145, to prevail over the field.

Lowe, who is heading back to Lennoxville, Quebec this week to re-join the golf team at Bishop’s University where he is set to begin his second year of studies, says of the victory last weekend, “It felt good. Everything was pretty solid with my game.

“Actually, the best part of my game was making some good 8-10 foot putts for bogey, as funny as it sounds. I got in trouble a few times but was able to make some good bogey putts to keep the double bogeys off my card. In general, my short putting was fairly solid which was nice.”

In other results, JM Titley won the ‘B’ flight with a two-day score of 166, Moe Bellefeuille was tops in the ‘C’ flight (182), and John Macleod won the senior flight (168).

Bellefeuille wins 2019 Alexandria Open

On Saturday, at the Glengarry Golf and Country Club, Lucien Bellefeuille triumphed over the field, firing a round of 77 to claim the championship of the 2019 Alexandria Open. He also won the ‘B’ Flight low gross award.

The ‘A’ flight low gross winner, with a score of 81, was Ben Lowe, who admits that he “didn’t bring his best stuff” to the competition. Lowe adds that he enjoyed the challenge, though, of the tough pin placements and wind.

‘B’ Flight top results: JM Titley (1st low net, 67), John MacSweyn (2nd low gross, 82), Denis Levert (2nd low net, 72).

‘C’ Flight top results: Charlie Titley (1st low gross, 82), Grant Oke (1st low net, 74), Alain Boisvenue (2nd low gross, 89), Michel Lefebvre (2nd low net, 74).

All three flights played from the same tee decks. The seniors used alternate tees.
