GDHS curling boys find success at The Gore

The boys curling team from Glengarry District High School had a successful run on Thursday at The Gore (the Ontario School Curling Championships) in Winchester, qualifying to advance to the next round, in February.

Teacher-coach Lindsey Howes tells me that her foursome reached the ‘A’ final game versus PDCI (Perth District Collegiate Institute). “Both teams played extremely well with some amazing shots called and made.” The score went back-and-forth throughout the match. In the 8th end, PDCI made a nice draw to tie and force an extra end.

The 9th saw the Gaels call a great end, keeping the house open for the last shot. However, it wasn’t to be for Glengarry, PDCI stole a point for the 6-5 win.

GDHS then played South Grenville DHS in the ‘B’ final game. The Gaels settled in and steadily added points to the scoreboard to take the win 10-1 after 6 ends.

PDCI and GDHS advance to the Ontario School Curling Championships regional playdowns on February 1 and 2. The hosting curling club has not been announced yet.

Howes notes that last season, she joined with Char-Lan coach Karl Armstrong to host two days of skills development at the curling club in Alexandria. At this time, it is not certain if that will again take place in 2020.

The SD&G high school curling championships are slated for February 11.
