Online football training for players and coaches

Ontario Football, along with its partners, has made available a number of online training resources for players and coaches.

The partnership with Jackson Yanchus and 3DownDevelopment provides “online content specific to the Canadian game, encouraging growth for players, coaches, and football fanatics.”

Announced on Monday, the initiative included “content on offence, defence, skill development, drills or tips, and tricks, explains Josh Prior, director of operations for the Ontario Football Alliance.

Here’s a sample video:

All of the videos, with new ones added regularly, can be viewed on the 3DownDevelopment YouTube page.

Specific to coaches, Ontario Football has launched a new NCCP Safe Sport E-Learning course. As of April 1, 2020, this is required training for all coaches working in Sport Canada sanctioned leagues and associations.

The course can be accessed here.

OFC Wildcats try online video conferencing for training sessions

They may not be able to practise in person at the Cornwall fieldhouse or together on a football field in the Seaway City, but members of the OFC Wildcats football team are finding ways to stay connected online and continue their workouts.

Using online video conferencing, coaches are connecting with their respective positional players, running them through workouts and providing immediate feedback.

As well, Cornwall gym owner Kyle Labelle has been posting workout videos to the Cornwall Minor Football Facebook page. Here’s a recent one:

Traditionally, at this time of year, players and coaches would be in the latter stages of their indoor training, hoping for fields to be dry enough in the coming days to begin sessions on the outdoor gridiron. The Cornwall Wildcats field an OFC (provincial-level squad for 16- through 19-year-olds) as well as teams in a recreational spring league that interlocks with teams from the Glengarry Gaels program (ages 7 through 15).

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current restrictions, there are no in-person activities permitted. Typically, outdoor season game action begins in late May.
