Glens end 2019 with 9-round shootout loss

It took a nine-round shootout to decide Friday night’s CCHL2 hockey game in Alexandria, where the Ottawa West Golden Knights found a way to get past the Glens in what went into the books as a 3-2 game.

Goaltender Tyler Desjardins, in his second game for Alexandria, stopped 24 of 26 shots through 65 minutes of play. In the shootout, he allowed two goals, as Ottawa’s Sam Edwards scored in the fifth round and Sam Brown found the target in the ninth round, for the win. The lone Glen to score, in round five, was Nico Pozzebon.

The former junior ‘C’ netminder who played three games this season for the South Grenville Rangers has a 1.92 goals against average in his two appearances for the Glens. His first effort, on December 13, resulted in a 5-2 victory over the Casselman Vikings. Desjardins in 19 years old and hails from Wendover. According to his Elite Prospects profile, the backstop has spent the last two seasons toiling in the NCJHL before getting his chance at the junior ‘B’ level with the Glens.

The Knights opened the scoring on Friday night with a goal 14 minutes into the game. The Glens got on even terms late in the second stanza when Etienne Agius-Pease found the back of the Ottawa net, assisted by Pozzebon and Nicolas Ouellette.

The visitors restored their lead 13 minutes into the third period. At the 15:19 mark, with Alexandria on a power play, Ryan Leonard scored to knot the affair at 2-2. Ouellette and Mikaƫl Bissonnette had the helpers.

Alexandria finished December with three points from four games. The Glens only win came against Casselman, while the team suffered regulation losses to the Richmond Royals, 3-1, and the Ottawa Jr. Canadians, 6-3.

At the Christmas break, the team has a record of 4 wins, 18 regulation losses, and 3 overtime/shootout losses, for 11 points and last place in the Martin Division of the CCHL2. Only the Athens Aeros (0-25-2) have a worse record, holding the basement of the Richardson Division.

On the roster front, the team’s primary goalie, Lancaster resident Danik Martin, is currently on the injured list. He last played on December 6. Desjardins was signed on the 11th, and veteran goaltender Nicholas Rousseau was removed from the active roster on December 18. The 20-year-old Glengarrian hadn’t played in net for the team since November 1, sidelined by a season-ending injury.
