Panthers prevail over rivals for Charity Bowl win

It was a defensive struggle with just five points scored – all in the first half – as the St. Joseph’s Panthers successfully defended their Charity Bowl championship tonight at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall, shutting down their Catholic rivals, the Holy Trinity Falcons.

The Panthers moved the ball early in the game for what would turn out to be the only offensive points mustered by either side, with their drive culminating in a field goal.

Late in the first half, with Holy Trinity struggling and pinned deep in their own end of the field, the punter opted to surrender a safety, making it a 5-0 lead for St. Joseph’s.

The third quarter saw the Falcons offence come to life, as the Green and Gold got its ground game going and moved into Panthers territory, but the period ended scoreless.

The teams traded possessions in the fourth quarter. Late, inside the final two minutes, Holy Trinity again found itself on the move, as the passing game started to click.

With 17 seconds remaining, the Falcons were threatening, with a first-and-goal at the six-yard line, but they were unable to punch it home. A run netted two yards, and two successive passes went for nought, as the clock wound to zero.

And the celebration was on for the Panthers, winners of the 2019 Charity Bowl, a fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Trust Fund.

The victory improves St. Joseph’s league record to 2-0 on the season, while Holy Trinity drops to 2-1. This was the first time in three SDGAA outings that the Falcons have allowed points against. The Panthers still have yet to allow any opposition scoring.
