Hearts/Filion soccer tournament draws community together

The October 12 Glengarry Hearts / Brian Filion Memorial Soccer Tournament at Alexandria’s Island Park once again drew strong support from the community, as 10 teams signed on to play, undeterred by the damp conditions that Mother Nature inflicted upon the region for the day.

David Filion notes, “It was great see so many people participate in this year’s annual Brian Filion soccer tournament. We saw players in their sixties and players who are in their early teens. We saw parents playing with their children. What was particularly encouraging was how many young players participated in this year’s tournament. The future looks bright for the tournament moving forward. What a terrific day!”

In all, explains Laurie Filion some 150 individuals were involved this year in the “family fun-oriented tournament.” DA MacMillan spoke at a noon ceremony recounting the history of the Hearts in Glengarry, as the program marks its 40th anniversary.

Ashton MacDonald, Molsen rep donated hockey tickets for a silent auction: 6 tickets in a suite. Winning the January 2 Ottawa versus Florida Panthers tickets was DA MacMillan and taking the 2 tickets for the November 15 game Ottawa against the Philadelphia Flyers was Matthew and Brittany Lacombe. The basket of cheer valued at $180 was won by Marty Doyle.

David Filion also spoke about the groups that benefit from the funds raised by the Filion Foundation.

One of the new features of this year’s tournament was the addition of a kids/family game.
