Two Glengarrian boys are part of the 2019 education U-Sports football team at Concordia University, in Montreal, and one of them, Rylan Duhart of North Lancaster, is getting his first opportunity to dress for a game this Friday.
Duhart, a first-year biochemistry student, was invited to join the team at the start of the school year when the squad suffered a shortage of linemen due to injuries. He’s been training with the boys and working out in the gym, looking for his opportunity. This week, he got it, as coaches informed him that he would be dressing for the September 27 game versus Université de Montréal. As a freshman, his playing time is likely to be limited, if at all. An offensive lineman, Duhart, should he be sent in, most likely would work on special teams or as a replacement for an injured teammate.
On the opportunity, Duhart tells me, “I’m very excited for it, but I don’t think I’ll be hitting the field unless someone gets hurt.” In preparing, he adds, “I’ve been looking over the plays a lot.”
The other Glengarry athlete with the Stingers is Alex Zarifi. He’s in his second year with the team, though he hasn’t yet played, due to injury. Zarifi, of Alexandria, is currently assisting the coaches as he recovers from a cracked collarbone.
