The August 24 golf tournament, which saw a full slate of participants hit the course, is one of two major fund-raising events. The other is the annual soccer tournament, held on Thanksgiving weekend.

Over the past two years, the Brian Filion Memorial Fund has contributed $1,000 to Lancaster Recreation in support of a new rink, $3,000 to the Glengarry Golf & Country Club in support of the Raise the Roof campaign, to the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame’s polar bear dip fund-raiser, $400 each year to the Bainsville Recreation Centre, $500 to the GDHS cross-country running team. $3,000 to the Alexandria Curling Club to help purchase a new ice machine, approximately $1,400 in school bursaries each year, and $4,000 to the GDHS senior boys soccer team to help with OFSAA expenses.

Brian Filion was particularly passionate about the senior boys soccer team at GDHS, a group he coached to its first OFSAA medal, in 1999. Over the past nine years, the Gaels have won five more medals, including two golds, the most recent of which came in June of this year.

In 2003, Brian was inducted posthumously into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame, in recognition of his significant contribution to county sports, as a player, coach, and mentor.

Below, David Filion speaks about his late brother’s legacy in the community. David Filion continues to coach the GDHS senior boys soccer team, along with Glen Campbell, and Laurent Rivard.
