Season ends for OFC Wildcats

The 2019 provincial football for the OFC Cornwall Wilcats came to an end Saturday in Barrie, where the boys were blanked 27-0, by the Huronia Stallions in the east division final.

Coach Kirby Camplin notes that the ‘Cats struggled on both sides of the ball, as the boys were unable to get their footing all game.

Despite the loss, it was a positive season for the club, with the team finishing at 6-3-1 on the season. The highlight was winning the east semifinal, the first playoff win for the Wildcats since 2014.

In Camplin’s words, it “was a great season, full of ups and downs. The kids got better every week, and they worked hard to make sure we got better. Always impressive when a small community can have success at that level of sport. Competing against bigger communities is something we love, and welcome.”

He adds that the team’s record of 6-3-1 on the season “is one of the most successful years for the Wildcats varsity program. Playing in a conference championship is a big deal. Only 4 of the 14 varsity teams were still playing, and we were one of them.”
