Locally, we have a big weekend of gridiron football on tap, with the conclusion of the spring youth tackle season and a home game for the OFC Cornwall Wildcats.
Things kick off in Maxville tonight (June 21) with the annual Friday night lights games. First up, at 6 p.m. will be a mosquito contest. The peewees will follow, slated to take the field at 7:30 p.m. Both are essentially consolation matches, as the competing teams all lost their respective semifinals last weekend. The event is a fundraiser for the food bank, part of Purolator’s Tackle Hunger program. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation.
On Saturday, at Joe St. Denis Field in Cornwall, the OFC Wildcats (2-1-1) will host the Huronia Stallions (4-0-0), at 4 p.m. The squad features a raft of local talent, both amongst the players and coaches.
Sunday will see the championship finals for spring house league youth football, with games in Alexandria and Cornwall. The Glengarry Gaels football club has two teams in action, both playing at the GDHS field. The tykes are slated to play for the title at 10 a.m. The mosquito Gaels will follow, at noon, looking to complete a perfect season.
In past years, I likely would have attended all of these games, covering them for The Glengarry News, shooting photos and writing stories. I am sorry that I cannot this time around, but I look forward to hearing the results. Good luck all!
